For many people, Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer — and it’s just around a corner! How are you going to celebrate? If you’re a Central Florida resident, the options are endless.
In today’s blog post, I want to share five things to do over Memorial Day weekend in Central Florida.
1. Watch holiday fireworks.
A number of local resorts put on epic Memorial Day firework displays for their guests. At the Orlando World Center Marriott, the show begins on Sunday at 9 p.m. with a laser light show to follow at 9:15 p.m. Meanwhile, the show at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate begins on Saturday at 9 p.m. Plus, Grande Lakes Orlando treats their visitors to fireworks every Saturday evening.
2. Enjoy the water!
Float down one of Central Florida’s natural lazy rivers, like Kelly Park and KP Hole. Or plan a kayaking experience. You can explore Rock Springs Run in a clear kayak; head to The Paddling Center at Shingle Creek in Kissimmee; or try a nighttime paddle thanks to A Day Away Kayak Tours. You can also book the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, with tours running daily on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and tickets costing just 16 dollars each.
It’s no secret that water activities are popular in the Sunshine State — even more so during a holiday weekend! If you’re unable to make reservations in advance, arrive early and be prepared to wait in line.
3. Head to the Rock N’ Blues Concert and Car Show.
if you’re into concerts and cars, Casselberry, Florida, is the place to be! The car show starts on Saturday at 4 p.m. and features over 150 vintage cars, including hot rods and muscle cars. The best part? Admission is free! Bring your blankets and chairs for the Rock N’ Blues concert, which kicks off at 5 p.m. and includes a Veterans Recognition Ceremony. This event is held at Lake Concord Park and also includes food trucks and other vendors.
4. Work up a sweat in the sun.
Kick off the summer with an outdoor exercise excursion! Cycle the West Orange Trail; start at Killarney Station and finish your ride in Downtown Winter Garden, where you can grab some ice cream at Scoops. Along the way, you can take a break at the Oakland Nature Preserve. For another option, head to the Cross Seminole Trail.
If biking isn’t your thing, take a hike at a local hotspot, like Lake Lotus Park, Lake Louisa State Park, Flat Island Preserve, or Wekiwa Springs State Park. The best part? Your pup can join too!
5. Enjoy Orlando Carnival Downtown.
At this festive Memorial Day event, you can get a taste of island life in The City Beautiful. The fun kicks off on Friday night with fabulous costumes at the Carnival on the Runway. Then, on Saturday, experience an explosion of color at Orlando Carnival J’ouvert. The day finishes up with Back in Time Lime, an authentic Caribbean experience filled with food, music, and culture. And on Sunday, you don’t want to miss the May Band Parade and Concert, which starts at 1 p.m. and lasts well into the evening hours.
